How to Put a GE Oven Into Diagnostic Mode

Editorially reviewedUpdated 2026-02-23

Overview: GE ovens have a built-in diagnostic mode that displays stored fault codes, tests individual components, and lets you verify sensor readings — all without a service technician. Here's how to access it.

Before you begin

Make sure the oven is completely cool before entering diagnostic mode. Do not enter diagnostic mode while any cooking cycle is active. Have a pen and paper ready to record any fault codes displayed.

Diagnostic mode is available on most GE freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges, and wall ovens manufactured from approximately 2010 onwards. The exact button sequence can vary by model generation — if the sequence below doesn't work, check your model's tech sheet (usually found by removing the bottom storage drawer and looking inside the frame).

Entering diagnostic mode

  1. Ensure the oven is in standby (not mid-cycle) and the display is showing the time or is idle.
  2. Press and hold Bake + Broil Hi/Lo simultaneously for 5 seconds.
  3. The display will show "tESt" or a dashed line to indicate diagnostic mode has been entered.
  4. On models without a Broil Hi/Lo button, try Bake + Self Clean held for 5 seconds.
  5. On newer GE models with a number pad, press 7, 8, 9 in sequence, then press 1, 2, 3.

Reading fault codes in diagnostic mode

  1. Once in diagnostic mode, press Start or the + button to cycle through stored fault codes.
  2. Codes are displayed as F followed by a number (e.g., F2, F3, F7) sometimes followed by a modifier digit.
  3. Record every code shown before clearing them.
  4. To clear stored codes, press Clear/Off while in diagnostic mode. This erases the log — always record codes first.

Common GE oven fault codes

  • F1 — control board / key input fault
  • F2 — over-temperature event
  • F3 — temperature sensor open circuit
  • F4 — temperature sensor short circuit
  • F5 — control board communication issue
  • F7 — latch motor feedback issue

Component tests available in diagnostic mode

Depending on your GE model, diagnostic mode may also let you test individual components manually:

  • Press 1 — bake element relay test (element should activate briefly)
  • Press 2 — broil element relay test
  • Press 3 — convection fan test (fan should spin for 5 seconds)
  • Press 4 — door lock motor test (latch should cycle)
  • Press 5 — display segment test (all display segments light up)

Not all component tests are available on all models. Check if the display responds to each press.

Exiting diagnostic mode

  1. Press Clear/Off twice to exit diagnostic mode.
  2. The display should return to showing the time or idle state.
  3. Alternatively, a power cycle (flip the breaker) will always exit diagnostic mode.

See all GE error code guides or browse other oven error codes.

When to use diagnostic mode vs calling a technician

Diagnostic mode is useful for:

  • Confirming which component is at fault before ordering a part
  • Verifying a repair was successful by checking no codes are stored
  • Giving a technician a head-start on diagnosis to reduce call-out time/cost

If diagnostic mode reveals F2 (over-temperature) or F7 (latch failure during self-clean) and the oven is exhibiting erratic behaviour, call a licensed technician. Gas oven diagnostics in particular should always involve a professional if any gas-supply components are suspected.

Frequently asked questions

Do all GE ovens have diagnostic mode?

Most GE electric ranges and wall ovens from 2010 onwards do. Older models and some gas-only models have limited diagnostic capability — check the tech sheet inside the machine.

I entered diagnostic mode but no fault codes showed — what does that mean?

It means no faults are currently stored. If the oven is behaving oddly, the fault may be intermittent and hasn't met the threshold to log a code — or the issue is mechanical rather than electronic.

Will clearing fault codes fix my oven?

Clearing codes removes the record of past faults — it doesn't fix the underlying problem. If the fault condition persists, the code will return on the next cycle.

Can I brick my oven by entering diagnostic mode?

No. Diagnostic mode is a read-only status and test mode. Exiting correctly (or power cycling) returns the oven to normal operation.
